What’s So Great About Pastured Poultry?

At Good Soil Farm we want to provide you with a source for the best food you can find! And that means we look at the animals as what God created them to be—not hunks of walking meat that are treated like they are in a factory or lab.

It is in the nature of a chicken to be able to walk and forage in the pasture, eating fresh bugs and grass and enjoying the sunshine. That’s why we move their houses daily! Each morning, Stephen moves the chickens to a new patch of pasture, which means they have a fresh, clean spot to eat and a fresh spot to spread their manure.

All of this adds up to

Technically, chickens and soil cannot, properly speaking, be happy. According to the Philosopher (aka Aristotle), “It is not surprising, then, that we regard neither ox, nor horse, nor any other kind of animal as happy; for none of them share in this sort of activity” (Nicomachean Ethics Book I Chapter 9). What sort of activity do they not share in? The activity that is happiness: the activity of the soul in accordance with reason and virtue over a complete and self-sufficient life (cf.  Nicomachean Ethics Book I Chapter 7). 

However, chickens and soil (and every creature) can be fulfilled/perfected in something analogous to happiness by reaching their own proper ends and living their own proper existence well within the orders of relations necessary to obtain their perfection. Rather than engaging in farming practices that frustrate or impede the animal and the soil from flourishing well in themselves and their constitutive relations, we, like a good friend, help the animal and soil (and every creature!) obtain their own proper perfection: for the chicken that means being-the-best-chicken-each-chicken-can-be! In short we help the chicken not just be a chicken but be a chicken well and obtain the good life that is analogous to happiness for a chicken!
