St. Joseph’s Day Blessing of the Farm

Every March 19, St. Joseph’s Day, we have the farm blessed. We learned about this day as a traditional day for a farm to be blessed in one of the many books I have read about Catholic traditions.

Both this year and last, Fr. Hanley, who is in charge of the propaedeutic year of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary, has blessed the farm on St. Joseph’s Day. For those of you who were able to make it to our St. John the Baptist Vigil Bonfire in June 2024, Fr. Hanley was also the priest who gave the traditional blessing of the bonfire.

This year, some of the propaedeutic seminarians (propaedudes, for short!) came out too! Fr. Hanley started by blessing the salt and the water that he would use for the blessing of the fields. Then we walked around the perimeter of the fields, praying as Fr. Hanley sprinkled them with the holy water.

What a beautiful experience! One of our goals with Good Soil Farm is to build up the culture of the community, and looking back to these time-honored traditions is one of the ways we are trying to do this!

Inviting Kestrels

On Sunday, Raphael and I looked into our Kestrel nest box with our camera attachment for the first time and saw a mama kestrel! Unfortunately, we were pretty surprised and did not get a picture fast enough! We did see her fly out of the nestbox, and later we got some photos of her eggs!…

Lamb Roast with the Propaedudes

Last Saturday, we continued our Easter Celebrations (50 Days of the Easter Season makes it just a tad bit longer than Lent!) by having a Lamb Roast with the Propaedeutic Year Seminarians (Propaedudes for short) on the farm! Stephen started by catching the two lambs that were designated for this purpose. These were not lambs…
