The Benefits of Homemade Broth

Why is it that we think of chicken soup as good for the common cold? Why do we eat jello to make our hair and nails stronger? And why do we take gelatin supplements for achy joints?

All for the same reason! Broth, jello, gelatin—they’re all made from the same ingredients: bone and cartilage from the animals we eat! And by eating those things in a very delicious way, we are taking in those nutrients that support our immune system, our nails and hair, and our joints!

But the quality of the source of broth, or jello, or supplements impacts the effect they have on us!

This is why we want to have a source of broth that is from animals raised on pasture according to their nature! After all, the healthier the animal was in its life, the healthier we will be when we eat food made from that animal!

And so we are super-excited to be able to offer you TWO OPTIONS for the best broth for you!

One option is making it yourself, either from our stew hens or from our regular chickens. The stew hens are great for stewing to make broth. Once they have been stewed long enough, you can use the meat in your soup or pot-pie or casserole. On the other hand, if you cook up one of the regular chickens, you will have a nice tender meal, and then you can use the bones to make broth.

The second option is to buy our ready-to-go broth, which we are offering for sale for the first time in 2024! This broth was made from our stew hens and is super concentrated—you should add an equal amount of water to the broth when you use it for soup. You can tell just by how gelatinous it is that it is super-healthy for you!

We are so glad to be able to offer this new farm product to you! We know that it is not always feasible to make your own broth, so this is a great product to keep on hand in your freezer for a quick thaw when you need to make soup, gravy, or pasta sauce! We hope you will try it out and let us know what you think!

But what do I do with broth?

The first thing we think of with broth is soup, of course, but there’s so much more you can do with it!

Here are some quick ideas off the top of my head! I’ll find some recipes to go with them—and because chicken broth is the mildest flavor profile of all the broths, you can always substitute it for other broth types!

Delicious Pasta made by Farmer Stephen–he used broth and endive as main ingredients in the sauce

And if you want to make some soup with your broth, we love this Sopa de Ajo (Garlic Soup)—it’s a great one to try for making a meal that is completely farm-to-table!

Of course, you don’t have to order broth ahead of time if you are picking up your CSA share at the farm—just ask Casey-Mae or Stephen while you are here at the farm!
